This Script of Mine
This Script started as an embodiment of Black bodily expression and my Haitian heritage. It was birthed and influenced by the symbolic nature of Vèvès and one of its ancestors, Nsibidi. It later made its way into my African-American heritage where it shifted to include African-American cultural influences. The Script eventually became the representation of my Black identity, it became a pictographic language representing my history, culture, and my longing for a Black land. It is now the language of the Black World that I depict in my work. A representation of the African-Atlantic, and my identity as an Afro-Atlantean. It is the Black body as the written language. A code securing the confines of a Black mind. A result of the Then and Now. I discover myself through it, and it grants me the freedom to speak without speaking.
